Then this is the blog for you. I have devoted this blog to my fellow froyoaholics. This is my quest to find and review places to allow all froyo followers to engorge themselves on the little bit of heaven that is froyo. So come into the light and join me in everything froyo.Kathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.comBlogger13125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708548884645532737.post-976681809274933252009-11-05T21:14:00.000-08:002009-11-05T23:07:32.347-08:00You're Sweet Harts...you guys and gals still reading my blog totally are sweet hearts! I apologize for my sporadic posting-I think i need to plan a more solid blogging schedule, with like a blog post every two days or so. That way I may feel like I am more accountable if I have a deadline-like school. Even you goody two-shoes out there have to admit that the creative juices really start flowing once we procrastinate and are down to the wire! But seriously, I do hope that anyone who does stumble upon this blog gets something from it!!!<br /><br />Now, I do go to USC, so yes, I meant to misspell my post title. If you have been following my blog for a bit, you may remember my little teaser post about a star-studded froyo opening I attended. Again, I didn't intend to be suchhh a tease and leave you hanging for this long...oops! But better late than never, so here we go!<br /><br />Drumrollllllll.........(although I wouldn't be surprised if you smart cookies already know where this is going...) and the celebrity founder is MELISSA JOAN HART, along with her mother, Paula Hart. Personally, I loveee the last name Hart-it's just too cute and there are so many ways to have fun with it. The Sweet Harts official website even said that Paula considered naming Melissa 'Sweet,' which I think is kinda cute together with the last name, but if you think about it, it would have been a little odd just being called Sweet, kind of like Apple or Kyd. But anyway, Sweet Harts is much more than a self-serve froyo establishment. In fact, froyo is only a small piecs of 'da puzzle! The other goodies include gelato, baked treats, and candy (both of the current and retro variety). Of course, I was there to sample the froyo! Disclaimer: *please keep in mind that the content of this review dates back to ummm, hehe, May 2009, and I do plan on returning to see if any recent updates have been made*<br /><br />The opening was quite the affair-purple carpet and all! From 12-2 there were swarms of paps (aka paparazzi for you non LA locals) waiting to snap pics of Melissa and her various celebrity friends in attendance. Even the mayor was there to cut the ribbon! I arrived promptly at 2 since a) I am not a paparazzo (or paparazza?) and b) I didn't want to get trampled by the camera wielding phalanx-they are quite a rough crowd! But when I got there, the cute outdoor decorations were still in tact-balloons, a purple carpet, and a vintage T-bird. <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO3BariCJI/AAAAAAAAAIc/ZEcI4Bhlwz8/s1600-h/DSC_0049.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO3BariCJI/AAAAAAAAAIc/ZEcI4Bhlwz8/s400/DSC_0049.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400861613117016210" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO4Q41Iw-I/AAAAAAAAAIk/nWg1kga-BOM/s1600-h/DSC_0053.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO4Q41Iw-I/AAAAAAAAAIk/nWg1kga-BOM/s400/DSC_0053.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400862978420032482" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO44pYApEI/AAAAAAAAAIs/qe4DgKjVkY0/s1600-h/DSC_0118.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO44pYApEI/AAAAAAAAAIs/qe4DgKjVkY0/s400/DSC_0118.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400863661466100802" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO5-9kAyzI/AAAAAAAAAI8/R_Ilibz-_Kg/s1600-h/DSC_0091.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO5-9kAyzI/AAAAAAAAAI8/R_Ilibz-_Kg/s400/DSC_0091.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400864869475994418" /></a><br />Upon entering, I had to kindly wriggle my way through the throngs to the wall of yogurt...love the chandelier though!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO6hvBrn8I/AAAAAAAAAJE/zDI-bdsjIVA/s1600-h/DSC_0080.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO6hvBrn8I/AAAAAAAAAJE/zDI-bdsjIVA/s400/DSC_0080.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400865466869325762" /></a><br />Is it just me, or was that server giving me the stink eye? Hmmm......<br /><br />There were five machines, each with two flavors, making for a grand total of 10 choices! The options when I visited were peanut butter, pistachio, peach, pomegranate energy (?), blueberry, vanilla tart, bubble gum, and birthday cake. For you math wizzes who noticed that I only listed eight froyo flavors-A plus! The chocolate and vanilla flavors on the first machine were actually not froyo, but low-fat soft serve-blasphemy! <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO9IHIqbyI/AAAAAAAAAJM/092IAEtUfm0/s1600-h/DSC_0085.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvO9IHIqbyI/AAAAAAAAAJM/092IAEtUfm0/s400/DSC_0085.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400868325199343394" /></a><br />I sampled the peach, pomegranate energy, birthday cake, bubble gum, vanilla tart, pistachio, and blueberry. <br /><br />I'll start with the negatives-the bubble gum=blechyyyy, but in all fairness, I am just not a fan of any bubble gum flavored froyo, so Sweet Harts, it's not personal. The birthday cake could've fooled me-it just tasted like sweet and fruity candy, more like tutti frutti-esque. Onto the good-the peach, pistachio, pom energy, vanilla tart, and blueberry were all pretty good flavor wise-tasted like you would expect. My only issue with all the flavors in general is that they were veryyyyy saccharine, even the vanilla tart. Hence, I found the after effect to not really be all that refreshing, but more like how you would feel after eating really sugary candy. Hey, at least it wasn't sour! In terms of consistently, they all were exactly the same-a tad icey, yet melty. No comment here in regards to the soft serve-not froyo, peeps! <br /><br />I documented the toppings for ya'll, but I didn't try any due to the tiny size of my froyo vesicle. I do believe Sweet Harts offers normal paper froyo cups, but for quantity purposes of this event patrons were provided with their smaller plastic gelato cups. They had a somewhat random array of dry sweets and cereals, such as fruit loops, pecans, and chocolate covered raisins. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPAnsZ2IJI/AAAAAAAAAJU/8ioOjie8KyM/s1600-h/DSC_0071.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPAnsZ2IJI/AAAAAAAAAJU/8ioOjie8KyM/s400/DSC_0071.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400872166314352786" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPA1zL7WPI/AAAAAAAAAJc/IuY4OqVO7tg/s1600-h/DSC_0072.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPA1zL7WPI/AAAAAAAAAJc/IuY4OqVO7tg/s400/DSC_0072.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400872408653191410" /></a><br />In hiding were swedish fish, granola, and licorice.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPBi9Q99pI/AAAAAAAAAJk/hpZcXQ777vE/s1600-h/DSC_0073.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPBi9Q99pI/AAAAAAAAAJk/hpZcXQ777vE/s400/DSC_0073.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400873184452802194" /></a><br />The fruit seemed pretty decent, expect that the pineapple appeared to be canned and the raspberries frozen. The peaches looked good though, and it was nice to see more unusual fruit such as coconut and cantaloupe! Both the dry and fresh toppings were in quite the disarray, but I attribute that to the nature of a grand opening!<br /><br />Ack, this post is getting a tad too long for my liking, so I'll try to wrap it up with a quick tour of the rest of Sweet Hearts' amenities. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPCeqkgf6I/AAAAAAAAAJs/QElsQXMXe5s/s1600-h/DSC_0082.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPCeqkgf6I/AAAAAAAAAJs/QElsQXMXe5s/s400/DSC_0082.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400874210226634658" /></a><br />View of Sweet Harts from the froyo wall. <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPDVi68TvI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/hF9JoAFKPmQ/s1600-h/DSC_0061.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPDVi68TvI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/hF9JoAFKPmQ/s400/DSC_0061.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400875153066053362" /></a><br />Il gelato!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPD1VgVA5I/AAAAAAAAAJ8/Ke38HqQkJLw/s1600-h/DSC_0107.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPD1VgVA5I/AAAAAAAAAJ8/Ke38HqQkJLw/s400/DSC_0107.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400875699220579218" /></a><br />Mmmm, cupcakes+froyo=possibilities!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPEJwgepgI/AAAAAAAAAKE/bixR3Pe0bpw/s1600-h/DSC_0112.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPEJwgepgI/AAAAAAAAAKE/bixR3Pe0bpw/s400/DSC_0112.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400876050066351618" /></a><br />Can-dayyy<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPEjTsir7I/AAAAAAAAAKM/rp6UD8YeWrE/s1600-h/DSC_0113.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SvPEjTsir7I/AAAAAAAAAKM/rp6UD8YeWrE/s400/DSC_0113.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400876489008918450" /></a><br />Self-serve pucker powder! They even have a great party room, for which they offer party packages with unique services, such as providing face painting or a caricature artist! While I don't see myself going there very often for the froyo alone, I definitely have plans to visit again, especially if I need some fun type of candy!<br /><br />OK...DONE.....oh, wait, did you guys want to see a celeb? I saved my favorite picture for last! She was so sweet, and was sporting a fab baby blue Betsey Johnson number. Yikes. Although my blog has been out of sight, it most definitely has not been out of mind. I have just been so busy with, well, life, that by the time I would get home at night I would crash-I've been reading so many others' blogs but just not working on my own. Props to my mom-she actually picked them out because they reminded her of a cutesy sweets shoppe! I have been waiting to get these made prior to getting really serious about my blog because honestly I will feel more professional and legit going in to and reviewing various froyo joints with them! So get excited!!!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/ShoVVfJjExI/AAAAAAAAAGU/Zi5023fiRtA/s1600-h/hungrl4blog.png"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 336px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/ShoVVfJjExI/AAAAAAAAAGU/Zi5023fiRtA/s400/hungrl4blog.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339603767084126994" /></a><br /><br />On the subject of blogs and pink, I have some interesting news about Pinkberry. Naturally for the majority of us froyo fanatics one of the lures of this tasty treat is its general healthfulness. So for those who tend to be health conscious and are well versed in froyo nutritionals, you may have noticed a recent change in the official PB stats. I definitely did while scouting out the new PB on Sunset that I previously covered, so I did some recon and quickly stumbled upon a detailed explanation on one of my favorite food blogs-Hungry Girl! (she is a great writer and has unique yet yummo food tips-so be sure to check out her two cookbooks!) <a href="http://hungry-girl.com/askhg/askhgdetails.php?isid=1762">Here</a> is the link to her 'Froyo Alert,' in which she not only gives us the change in numbers, but also some general froyo tips to keep us gals (and guys?) healthy! <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/ShoVhSY8GrI/AAAAAAAAAGc/_qgk2aYm15o/s1600-h/swirlswheels.png"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 153px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/ShoVhSY8GrI/AAAAAAAAAGc/_qgk2aYm15o/s400/swirlswheels.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339603969817451186" /></a><br /><br />My last tidbit of PB news is quite innovative, yet sadly only applies to those of us lucky enough to reside in Manhattan (ahhh, my inner Carrie Bradshaw is cravin' Tasti D-Lite now-I've actually never tried it, but that will change soon!!!). Moving on, PB has recently launched a new endeavor entitled 'Swirls on Wheels.' <a href="http://www.pinkberry.com/html/Delivery_Menu.pdf">Here</a> is the delivery menu-it isn't too explicit in terms of how to place an order, so I'm guessing you just call the nearest location, place your order, and then give them your desired delivery location. Pretty painless-although even if they did have this service in LA, I'm not sure if I'd utilize this feature, as I'd assume the froyo itself would be fresher and less melty straight from the machine. And I think I would enjoy the walk to the actual store to get some air and exercise! But that's just me speaking-my LA born and bred legs are probably pathetically underused compared to any given Manhattanite! Nonetheless, it is a cute idea that might really take off! Hmmm, I wonder if they deliver the PB on little pink bikes-coupled with the pastel uniforms, that would take quite a confident male hehe! If anyone in da Big Apple has already or has plans to utilize this luxury, I would loveee to hear feedback, and maybe even see some pics!<br /><br />Okey dokey, that's it for the immediate hour, buttt lots more to come so please check back veryyy soon! And to my readers, thank you for taking the time to read my blog and for any comments-once I get all my shiz together I will be commenting on your blogs as well!!!!! Peace out loves!<br /><br />P.S. If you go <a href="http://www.pinkberry.com/">here</a> to the official PB website and click 'click to continue,' a little window should pop up with the PB Remix by Lady Tigra-meow meow!!!<br /><br />LINKS:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.colorfulimages.com/">Colorfulimages.com</a><br /><br /><a href="http://hungry-girl.com/">Hungry-girl.com</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.pinkberry.com/">Pinkberry.com</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.tastidlite.com/">Tastidlite.com</a>Kathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708548884645532737.post-32109237812513819422009-05-10T22:10:00.001-07:002009-05-10T22:20:26.530-07:00Froyo for Your MoomooHey y'all! I know I said to expect this post right after the previous one the other night, but a) I actually was tired and fell asleep (yaya!) and b) I have been busy with other business matters, including getting a summer job (a girl's gotta pay the bills until this darn blog takes off!). Moving on, this post is the first of a very exciting series concerning the froyo chain Menchies! For those of you unfamiliar with the establishment please check out their great website I have made a link to at the end of this post, but now I'll also give you a little background. <br /><br />The first storefront, located on Laurel Canyon Blvd. in Valley Village, opened up in May 2007. That initial location boomed almost immediately-it was truly love at first brain freeze for all valley dwellers. As the company's 10 year projection plan was realized in less than a year, the Menchie's franchise empire was born. Now you can find a Menchie's not only in California, but also Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and even Hawaii! A-loooooo-ha!!! <br /><br />Now what makes Menchie's so darn lovable??? Well, the peeps over at Menchie's headquarters have found that perfect, balanced equation for a successful business-they serve up a great product at a decent price, but most of all they make the entire experience exactly that-an experience!!! Menchie's was started by an adorable, real life couple who had their first date in a frozen yogurt shop. It was then that she had the dream to start her own "frozen yogurt utopia" (quoted from the official website, which has more details so check it out!). I know one of the first things that caught my attention was the unique name. Menchie's, Munchies, what??? It may be a tad more difficult for older generations to grasp and say out loud (my parents alwayssss call it Munchies, but what can I expect? I'm used to it, as my mom also always asks me if I'm going to yogurt when I know she means yoga. Ah, the daily pleasures of aging-just playing, mom knows I love her for it!). My research from the website revealed that there is a method to the apparent madness. The name Menchie actually stemmed from an affectionate nickname that Adam gave to Danna (the founders). SO CUTE!!!! <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SgDNJj5rjqI/AAAAAAAAAF8/FZiRgF086fM/s1600-h/DSC_0212.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SgDNJj5rjqI/AAAAAAAAAF8/FZiRgF086fM/s400/DSC_0212.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332487522946354850" /></a><br /><br />Basically adorable just sums up the whole place. Every Menchie's is outfitted in the same bright color scheme of lime green, fuschia, violet, and a hint of pink. Everything from the bubbled glass tiles on the walls to the cartoonish signs create a laid back, welcoming atmosphere. This place is just FUN! and the employees couldn't be nicer-you can really tell that Menchie's puts a strong emphasis on family! The company even works to support local schools and businesses! And to put the cherry on top of the business is the star of the show-the froyo!!!!! Each store has an average of six machines, which equals TWELVE flavors, plus the über cool twirl option. Oh, did I mention it was SELF-SERVE??? That really is the way to go these days-the public wants their freedom of froyo! Now, although I do love myself some self-serve, I can get easily peeved with the patron congestion. Between the people sampling every flavor and the rest shoving to fill their humongous cups, you can easily lose an eye (or at least break a nail!). This is why I greatly appreciate the layout of Menchie's. Each store space is designed as somewhat of a horseshoe. In the center of the store is a circular kiosk that serves as the home for the sample cups (free for all!), waffle maker, and registers. As you enter the store, you precede to the left of the kiosk to pick up your cup from hanging wall dispensers. Then you make your way around the kiosk to the wall of froyo machines. After you fill your cup up to your little heart's desire, you naturally find yourself as the abundant topping bar, which houses over 40 chilled and room temperature toppings. To put it bluntly, the range of toppings is bomb-by far the most vast selection i've seen. And after the toppings, tada-you're at the register! Genius!!! Of course when it's packed it's still packedddd, but this layout leads to a nice flow of traffic! <br /><br />On to the goods! The yogurt itself is delish. Among the twelve or so flavors, there are always low fat, non fat, sorbet, lactose free, kosher, low carb, and no sugar added options! The mixes themselves are Menchie's own (i.e. not from YoCream, Wow Cow, etc.), and therefore the nutritional facts are more illusive, but they do list some of them on the website. Naturally, the NSA, sorbet, and tart flavors are a bit less creamy than the others, but that is expected. Overall, the flavors are consistent-consistently nummy!!! And there are so many flavor options that I can't imagine ever getting bored! And I have already gushed about the toppings, but they are an integral part to any final froyo creation! <br /><br />Okkkk, let's see-history: check, locations: check, atmosphere: check, froyo and toppings: check. I feel as if I am missing somethingggggg-oh yeah, PICTURES! I will always post some sort of visual because, well, we do eat with our eyes! And otherwise my ramblings would bore all my readers to death-not good! As I continue this blog, I will make my way to all froyo shops, which hopefully will one day include every Menchie's location. To start us out, I will take you to the grand opening of the Redondo Beach location. Here we go!<br /><br />The grand opening festivities included a live dj!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SgDDyoQHwzI/AAAAAAAAAEU/J_lLmpYqCVA/s1600-h/DSC_0215.JPG"><img style="display:block; Quoting one of the movies that tops the list of things that makes me me (10 Things I Hate About You, for those youngsters asking themselves what the heck am I taking about), I finally feel like I am ready to really get this blog a'rollin! On a side note, has anyone seen the trailer for Dance Flick??? Purely sacreligious if you ask me (if you can't tell already, I love any movies with Julia Stiles-or Heath Ledger *tear*, about dancing, or basically from the 90s). Okey dokeyyy, back to froyo, although I am planning on writing little tidbits about myself here and there so you guys, my readers (if I even have any at this point lol) can get to know me!!! <br /><br />So, as the title alludes, this post concerns my birthday!!!!!!! Granted it was April 7th, almost a month ago (sheesh!), I still want to share my 'cake.' I have already posted about the mythical 'froyo cake,' but this year since it was just me at home (my twinky was away at her college-Vandy!) I decided upon a treat that was a bit more modest. Now I have never ever been a cake girl, so no tears of pity if it seems I missed out on a traditional b-day rite of passage. Seriously, the only type of cake I'll eat is devils food cake, angel food cake, or cake batter FLAVORED froyo hehe. So at the conclusion of a fab dindin at Nobu (sooo many veg options yayyyy!) that included a star spotting (okay, it's not completely blog-worthy, just Cheryl Hines, but my parents got excited haha), we naturally preceded to Studio (aka Studio City Frozen Yogurt, briefly mentioned in a previous post). <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5wa04nI_I/AAAAAAAAADk/AzbfTU21Al8/s1600-h/DSC_0223.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5wa04nI_I/AAAAAAAAADk/AzbfTU21Al8/s400/DSC_0223.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331822615028245490" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5xZNb9wSI/AAAAAAAAADs/Do4fokAnPkM/s1600-h/DSC_0226.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5xZNb9wSI/AAAAAAAAADs/Do4fokAnPkM/s400/DSC_0226.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331823686770868514" /></a><br /><br />And this is my beauty!!! I got a medium half dulce de leche (muy deliciosa) and half some kind of chocolate, sorry guys-I can't remember exactly which kind, ie chocolate, malt, fudge brownie, etc-bad blogger :( Nevertheless it was just what I wanted to end my day of celebrations, and yes, those are candles stuck in the froyo itself. I found the prettiest colored flame (AP Chemistry, anyone?) at BB&B (Bed, Bath, and Beyond), and they made for quite a pretty dessert! <br /><br />Now on to matters I mentioned the other day-the Pinkberry picture I promised. As most of you probably know, PB has pretty strict rules of absolutely zippo photos or videos of the store-neither inside nor out. And even standing outside at a safe distance made my palms a bit balmy as I don't ever feel very conspicuous carrying around my paparazzi-esque Nikon! Luckily, I found a perfect spot right outside my gym, which is on the second story of the outdoor complex. I was able to smoothly pop my camera out of my gym bag, snap a few pics of the storefront, and bolt. Nope, I'm not a stalker at all.... <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5u42Xou0I/AAAAAAAAADU/HoO2h2gIluE/s1600-h/DSC_0275.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5u42Xou0I/AAAAAAAAADU/HoO2h2gIluE/s400/DSC_0275.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331820931799628610" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5vUXrWhrI/AAAAAAAAADc/C2rvxUkoyQE/s1600-h/DSC_0273.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5vUXrWhrI/AAAAAAAAADc/C2rvxUkoyQE/s400/DSC_0273.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331821404597159602" /></a><br /><br />To make up for my lack of inside pics (and for the matter, pics of actual froyo-my sis was hungry, and I didn't get my own because PB isn't really my cup'o'tea, or froyo i guess), I swiped (ok, they were free) a menu-and that has a pretty picture on it, so there! <br /><br />Is it just me, or are the milk and white chocolate shavings new? They are not on the menu, just in the store. Also, they still haven't put mochi on the menu! Why do they keep it like a 'secret topping?' Seriously, PB virgins (if they exist in Los Angeles anymore!) might wander into the store and never even have the chance to nosh on those fluffy little perfect pillows of glutinous rice flour-so sad! Well once I get my official looking business cards made, I definitely plan on trying to get some interviews with or statements from PB execs! <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5yJRIomII/AAAAAAAAAD0/bUpalwHJme8/s1600-h/DSC_0002.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5yJRIomII/AAAAAAAAAD0/bUpalwHJme8/s400/DSC_0002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331824512397252738" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5ycWeBgOI/AAAAAAAAAD8/EtBai8qfVJk/s1600-h/DSC_0003.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5ycWeBgOI/AAAAAAAAAD8/EtBai8qfVJk/s320/DSC_0003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331824840246657250" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5y6Au7RII/AAAAAAAAAEE/y0MuiEyBcRs/s1600-h/DSC_0004.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5y6Au7RII/AAAAAAAAAEE/y0MuiEyBcRs/s400/DSC_0004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331825349808047234" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5zTVwf0WI/AAAAAAAAAEM/biiztMw-E8M/s1600-h/DSC_0005.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/Sf5zTVwf0WI/AAAAAAAAAEM/biiztMw-E8M/s400/DSC_0005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331825784948511074" /></a><br /><br /><br />Gah, I meant for this to be a wee little post - oops - because I have more news to write about, but I didn't want to bombard you with an epic post that would scare away my readers-I need all that I can get! Now I'm gonna leave you with a little suspense to ensure you guys check the blog later tonight (or possibly early morning due to my nocturnal tendencies) for VERY exciting news of a GRAND OPENING.........<3<br /><br />P.S. You can tell PB about your experience at GOODNESS@PINKBERRY.COMKathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708548884645532737.post-38970203652282533712009-04-30T16:20:00.000-07:002009-04-30T16:52:49.995-07:00WOW. I'm finally back from my mini froyo hiatus (in the blog sense, not the consumption!). It has been forever since I posted-which was totally unplanned. Kathryn has been a very busy bee! Sheesh, I have so many ideas and events to post about, but I am going to keep this comeback post short and sweet because i have a LIMITED TIME OFFER to share with you peeps. I was prancing down the stairs after a hot and heavy yoga/elliptical sesh at Crunch on Sunset, and low and behold, who is awaiting my arrival at the bottom??? None other than a electric blue clad girl luring me in with a huge tray of mini froyo cups and a smile! My endorphins already running wild post workout, I think I actually let out an audible squeal. The new Pinkberry on Sunset (in the complex housing my other love, Crunch Gym, and Sushi Dan, CB2, etc.) is OPEN TODAY! Well they "officially" open tomorrow, but the doors are open today and that just means today they are giving away FREE SAMPLES of the various flavors in little cups (I nibbled on an original-pomegranate swirl with one piece of a succulent mango, with no frets about totally canceling out my workout). But more blog-worthy than samples is that if you go into the store, they give you a FREE SMALL with TWO FREE TOPPINGS-the concoction is left up to us, their "test" patrons. So if you are anything like me and can't stand to pass up free euphoria, GO TO PINKBERRY ON SUNSET NOW!!!!!!! The free small only exists until 7 pm TONIGHT, so get your hot selves down there ahora!!! Sorry there are no pics today, but I'm not in the habit of bringing my big camera to the gym-that might be frowned upon! But I will sacrifice my self for the cause and take pictures after yoga tomorrow! Okey dokey I'll leave this post at that, but don't shed a tear, the froyo queen is here, and back with a vengeance. I have many many goodies in the works, including hot of the press, exclusive Menchie's news! So be sure to check for new and tantalizing posts-after you go stuff yourselves with one of the best natural highs-free froyo!!!!! Ciao bambini!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pinkberry.com/html/pbmain.php">Pinkberry</a> <br />8000 Sunset Blvd <br />Los Angeles CA 90046<br />P Coming SoonKathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708548884645532737.post-66440299691703084132009-02-14T00:53:00.000-08:002009-02-14T03:06:18.093-08:00Love in the Air, Froyo in the TummyMy apologies, but I am postponing my Froyo and the City post for a wee bit as it is VALENTINE"S DAY!!! (whether that fact is to your dismay or to your delight) I find it quite ironic that a day devoted to love is loathed by so many. Personally, I am neutral-so far I have had no noteworthy V-day, but I do believe it has potential. Normally I have really bad luck in general and would be pessimistic, but since I survived Friday the 13th without a scratch I have high hopes for my future-but I still have to survive the next Friday the 13th (two in one year!?! jeez, someone has a sense of humor). One small pro of the holiday is that all business establishments (or all that I am aware of at least) are open, so no froyo withdrawals! <div><br /></div>Speaking of love...<br /><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SZah7FpTkwI/AAAAAAAAAC4/EbjCbkdVpTM/s320/DSC_0180.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302603647775118082" /><div style="text-align: center;">I love butterflies...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SZaiff8RunI/AAAAAAAAADA/NHejN-9G-Jk/s320/DSC_0845.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302604273309301362" /><div style="text-align: center;">and macaroons...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SZai2RRHaaI/AAAAAAAAADI/x3T4ejZRAQE/s320/DSC_0159.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302604664507165090" /><div style="text-align: center;">and sunsets! </div><div style="text-align: center;">(all three pics I took during my summer trip to France and Switzerland)</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Anyway, so if you are out with your honey or just with good friends (possibly seeing Friday the 13th, because Jared Padalecki+anything=love), and you are feeling a bit peckish, go get yourselves some froyo! Specifically, may I suggest Menchie's? In addition to being self-serve and having some bomb froyo, they are one of the only froyo places I could find with a V-Day deal! They are offering a limited edition Valentine's day buy-1-get-1 free coupon! So get your booties over there asap for twice the froyo and twice the love, but not twice the price! Now, how could you top that? Well, Menchie's thought of a way-they are launching their Redondo Beach location's grand opening events this weekend (Feb. 14th&15, 12pm-5pm). In addition to the yummy yogurt, there will be a live d.j., color-in tees, and cool giveaways. And hint to the guys reading this, your gal might like this as a fun V-Day date-well at least I would! The Redondo Beach location is almost 20 miles away from my home base, but I feel obligated to make my way down there sometime this weekend, with my Nikon D40 in tow to cover the event-so no tears if you don't live in SoCal and are unable to attend, cause that's what I'm here for! (and stay tuned for more Menchie's news, and an official review!)<br /></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 228px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SZaao176UBI/AAAAAAAAACw/0pm0PbDnm-M/s320/MENCHIES.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302595637739147282" /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SZaW-_fStHI/AAAAAAAAACY/lKsp7I2evs4/s320/DSC_0656.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302591620214076530" /><div>Another fun idea for those of you who do wish to acknowledge V-Day is to party with a FROYO PIE. Now, what the heck is a froyo pie, you may ask? Well, actually you may not be asking because it is as self explanatory as it seems. I had one for my 18th birthday, and basically it consists of a traditional pie dish filled with a graham cracker crust, followed by a thin layer of fudge, frozen yogurt plus your desired fillings, and topped with more toppings, such as jimmies. Mine had chocolate and vanilla flavored froyo layers, separated by a layer of cookie dough. It was topped off with rainbow sprinkles and hot fudge. My mom ordered the pictured pie from Studio Yogurt (a full review to come), but it wasn't a piece of cake. She discovered that the order for the pie must be placed more than 24 hours before the desired pick-up date. Also, they apparently only make pies with the vanilla and chocolate yogurt, which they tried to explain had something to do with their flavor rotation schedule-it sounded like a bunch of b.s. to me, but nevertheless the pie was delicious. You can pick whatever topping you want to go in the middle, like we did with the cookie dough. I have also seen similar looking pies in the freezers at Penguins Yogurt. They were pre-made, but you may be able to order custom ones as well. My</div><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SZaZkq_de1I/AAAAAAAAACo/Ivz2z6UViJQ/s320/DSC_0664.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302594466570140498" />birthday pie overall was a small mound of heaven. It works perfectly to store the leftovers in the freezer, but of course in my house the pie had a lifespan of approximately three days-poor thing never had a chance. I think a yogurt pie is an adorable and unique way to celebrate any occasion, or if you're like me, just any ole day!!!<div><br /></div><div>So, whether your day is filled with love or just froyo, I wish everyone a fabulous Valentine's Day!!! <3<div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>COMING UP: FROYO AND THE CITY (I promise!)</div><div><br /></div><div>Menchie's </div><div>Original Location: 4849 Laurel Canyon Blvd.</div><div>Valley Village, CA 91607 </div><div>(818) 985-9150</div><div><a href="http://menchies.com/">www.menchies.com</a> </div><div><br /></div><div>Studio Yogurt </div><div>12050 Ventura Blvd. Ste 105</div><div>Studio City, CA 91604</div><div>(818) 508-7811</div><div><br /></div><div>Penguins Yogurt </div><div>2180 Westwood Blvd Ste 1A</div><div>Los Angeles, CA</div><div>90025</div><div>(310) 470-2919</div><div><a href="http://www.penguinsfrozenyogurt.com/">www.penguinsfrozenyogurt.com</a> </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div></div>Kathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708548884645532737.post-91056382919312938042009-02-08T18:05:00.000-08:002009-02-11T10:27:11.682-08:00Meet Me In St. Louis, Part Deux<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Ok froyo peeps, sorry for the hiatus (I was feeling under the weather), but we are still back in the STL for my next review. As previously stated in Part One of this St. Louis set, I was quite troubled by the lack of froyo prospects before I moved to good ole Missouri. But to my delight, one of my first friends from a pre-orientation (who just happened to be a native St.Louisian) informed me of a new froyo place soon to grace the quintessential Wash U haunt that is Delmar Boulevard, or the Loop. So of course as soon as my parents pulled up to my new dorm in their stunning rented sea foam green minivan, we were off, leaving my numerous unpacked moving boxes back in a cloud of dust. At that point in time, the storefront was all glass, but completely shrouded by a 'coming soon' tarp. I was able to peak through a crack in the door like a total creeper and saw pretty decent progress in terms of decor and fixture installations. I was about to leave fairly satisfied with my findings when I noticed a piece of water-stained 8x11 'now hiring' flyer. My mental wheels immediately started to turn. It was as the gods had answered my froyo prayers!</span><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SY-gmT0uxnI/AAAAAAAAACA/f57PzcVGeqc/s320/FROYOoutside.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300631866455279218" /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'trebuchet ms';">To spare you the tedious details, I did end up working at Froyo for its first few weeks in business, but had to relinquish my position there in an attempt to salvage my schoolwork and social life. It was also a plus to escape my greasy-haired, 16 year old coworker who apparently thought it was her job description to criticize the way I wiped the counter. I was also glad to not have to walk home alone at 11 at night in an area where cops seem to be more common than fried ravioli. Anywayyy, I did have a very good experience getting to see the behind the scenes reality of running a new froyo business. I'm not going to lie and say that scrubbing the sticky froyo drippings of the machine handles for seven hours was glamourous in the least. But I truly loved being able to get to know the owners, ask them my numerous questions, and share my ideas. Regardless of the establishment, I would go back to Froyo solely for the owners (they are such a sweet couple!). But thankfully for them and Midwestern froyoaholics, the place rocks!</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">The Storefront itself is bright and cheery. Patrons are greeted my a glowing sign and floor to ceiling glass windows, luring them into the froyo heaven. There is definitely a tangible aura to the place-I'm not sure if it's the green apple colored walls, the likes of Katy Perry booming from the speakers, or the combination. In a nutshell, the place is alarmingly reminiscent of Yogurtland, with a touch Pinkberry. Not exactly innovative (well maybe for the area), but definitely warm and hip.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'trebuchet ms';">After the shock<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Georgia;"> </span>of candy colored walls wears off and you are able to fight through the throngs of sorority girls, you reach the backed tiled wall. Much like any self serve shop, under the 'how to' sign there is a small counter that houses the cups, which only come in two sizes-big and bigger. I overheard some costumers gripe about the monstrous cups, but once the toppings are in the mix I certainly had no complaints. To the right of the cups sit six, state-of-the-art Taylor machine, glimmering in the sea of blue and green glass tiles. The L-shaped walls (with two machines on one, and four on the other) do make it a bit of a struggle to maneuver, but overall the selections are impressive.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">The only froyo brand offered is Dannon YoCream (which seems to be taking over the world). The flavors do rotate, but I am not aware of a set schedule-it is more like when one runs out they refill it with a new flavor. Another small flaw, which I attribute to being new, is that at one point there were two tart options (an original and a Euro), yet no staple vanilla. Also, you are able to sample the flavors, but you have to ask for the sample cups and then you may get anywhere from one to seven. At least they don't fill the sample cups for you-I really hate when they do that at a self-serve place, and then watch you as you try it!</span></div><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SY-eDnd9m0I/AAAAAAAAABw/bskXrG9oZMs/s320/FROYOinside.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300629071409814338" /><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'trebuchet ms';">On a positive note, I was around during the holidays and was pleased to see seasonal flavors, such as pumpkin pie (score!!!) and peppermint stick. The other flavor options that I noted over time were the two tarts, mango tart, alpine vanilla, cable car chocolate, dark chocolate, green tea, peanut butter, white chocolate macadamia nut, cookies and cream, chocolate mint, root bear float, and espresso. The bubble yum was, well, not yummy at all-please steer clear of that one. They also offer one NSA (like blueberry) or sorbet (like strawberry kiwi) flavor. Except for the tarts and sorbets, all the options are very creamy and extremely rich in flavor! The only issue I had was with the nutritional postings. The glass sign on the wall boasts 100 calories per 4 ounces, but I am confident that it does vary slightly among certain flavors. Also, it was a tad confusing as to which flavors contained trace fat, as some flavors like dark chocolate were labeled non-fat while others like peanut butter were without any label. Also, the froyo temperature was inconsistent at times, but mostly that was in the first month because they were so new. My favorite flavors there are the peanut butter, dark chocolate, cookies and cream, and pumpkin pie. Overall, quite divine!!!</span><div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Now on to the toppings schmorgasboard. There is quite a range-candy to cereal-to fresh fruit-to appease any pallet. I do have to note that sometime the berries are frozen, which I find bitter and greatly unappetizing. But the other offerings are great-a range of syrups (think fudge, caramel, and marshmallow), mini marshmallows, sprinkles, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, bananas, kiwi, huge cubes of cheesecake, and etc, etc, etc! One thing I found kinda odd was that they had a glass toppings sign on the wall behind the register, but it must have been made purely for decor purposes and before they actually bought the toppings because it listed random things like grapes that clearly were no where to be seen. But, no biggy. The most notable topping by miles is the cookie dough. O-M-G. It is unbelievable!!! It looks and tastes like huge chunks of those circles of pre-formed Tollhouse dough balls. They are chilled, but still soft and chewy. Seriously, it has to be too good to be true (meaning that it IS the Tollhouse stuff, and therefore not egg-free), but I am more than willing to overlook that fact for the sake of my taste buds.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SY-ejeNN0FI/AAAAAAAAAB4/ZUQzoRO4pSw/s320/FROYOcups.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300629618679468114" /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Once you finish loading up at the toppings buffet, you find yourself at the register, complete with a little scale. At 39 cents an ounce, Froyo's froyo is pretty economical, although I do find myself 'conveniently' setting my purse in front of the scale screen as to shield the obscene weight and price from the other patrons' innocent eyes. On average, I end up paying between six and nine dollars, but hey, that's just me (or more accurately it's the hunk of cookie dough hiding in my cup!).</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">On a final note, if you ever end up in the middle of the Midwest, anywhere remotely close to St. Louis (I give it a 50 mile radius-hey, day trip!), then GO TO FROYO. I give it 4/5 froyo cones! And also there is nowhere else to turn to hit that froyo craving in the butt. So my lovelies, with this post I depart on a mental journey back to beautiful Los Angeles, where the sun is hot, and the froyo rivers run deep. See ya there! <3</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">COMING UP: FROYO AND THE CITY</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">*expect more extensive pics for future posts-I wrote this after I left STL*</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Froyo</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">6329 Delmar Blvd</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">St. Louis, MO 63130</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">(314) 862-1717</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/fro-yo-st-louis">http://www.yelp.com/biz/fro-yo-st-louis</a></span></div></div></div></div>Kathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708548884645532737.post-79105786823119156102009-01-25T17:49:00.000-08:002009-01-25T19:41:11.741-08:00Meet Me In St. Louis<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">The time has come for my first official review! Although I am based in Los Angeles and will subsequently be reviewing mostly SoCal froyo establishments, I always have my eyes peeled for froyo wherever I go. </span><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">For the first semester of my freshman year of college, I attended Washington University in St. Louis. I was very excited to give a new city a try, and St. Louis had a lot going for it, minus one major aspect-yup, you guessed it, FROYO!!! Born and raised in L.A., I am extremely spoiled in the froyo department. Pinkberry-check, old school 80's froyo joints, check (how it all started!). Basically any type of froyo-old and new-was at my fingertips. Now along with giving up my family, friends, and spacious bedroom, I was giving up my daily (yes, daily) froyo fix.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Of course I did some serious recon before migrating eastward, and was not too optimistic about the results. I discovered the Midwest's version of froyo was the historic treat called frozen custard, and in St. Louis, specifically from Ted Drewes. According to handy Wikipedia, frozen custard is a cold dessert similar to ice cream, made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. It typically contains 10% butterfat and 1.4% egg yolk. I unfortunately never got the blessed opportunity to try fresh frozen custard, but I did sample some in a pre-packed container after Wash U's opening ceremony. I tried the vanilla, sans toppings (but according to their websites they have flavors ranging from Tart Cherry to Pistachio, and a concoction called a concrete, for which they blend in toppings and custard and freeze the mixture).</span></div><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 195px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SX0mpvLb4pI/AAAAAAAAABA/kYjEpGn40QQ/s320/teddrewes1.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295431235338494610" /><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">The vanilla was good (albeit quite caloric), but not stellar in my eyes. I hear some Midwesterners swear by it, but I guess it's just not my style (I'm more of a classic 80's froyo girl-think Penguins or Golden Spoon-esque). But then again, it was very creamy and dense, and I do highly encourage you guys to try it fresh from the stand if you every find yourselves in the STL.</span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Now further research led me to discover that Bear's Mart, the local minimart on the South 40 (the campus that houses the university's dormitories) houses a small, self-serve, two-flavor Taylor frozen yogurt machine. *As a side note to fellow bears, there is a machine in the Duc Cafe, but it only offers a small size cup, is not self-serve (so expect to get gypped), and minimal toppings. I swear it also doesn't taste as good-not as creamy, and kinda </span></div><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SX0mPUlxUVI/AAAAAAAAAA4/dPwhfkAGXgE/s320/froyokiss.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295430781524595026" /><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'trebuchet ms';">sour blech.* Back to Bear's Mart. Granted they only serve chocolate and vanilla (plus the swirl option), any froyo is better than zilch! I was quite delighted upon further investigation on the Bon Appetit (Wash U's food service) website that the froyo was nonfat and came in at 100 calories per 4 oz. for the vanilla and 110 for the chocolate. The froyo itself is creamy and sweet, and actually surprisingly pretty when swirled together-froyo art! One of the only cons is that it did melt a tad quickly, especially in the sticky late months of the MO summer-ew. In terms of toppings, there are tall plastic cups next to the machine filled with rainbow sprinkles (my usual), mini M&M's, granola, and crushed oreos and various candy bars, such as Kit Kat and Heath Bar. Another con is the absence of fresh fruit-the only option was to buy your own berries for an extremely inflated price, boo.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__31mD-hU1iY/SX0kWbGzKXI/AAAAAAAAAAw/mBb-pyxI1y4/s320/DSC_0003.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295428704509569394" /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Ok, so I was pretty dern glad that I wouldn't have to go three months cold turkey, but me being the perfectionist that I am, what satisfies some still makes me strive for more. This tendency of mine led me to meet with the Bon Appetit directors a few times, and I even got them to do test runs of the froyo mixes that I had ordered and gave to them (I got chocolate from Carb-a-whey and pumpkin and cheesecake from Wow Cow-my goal was to change up the flavors, as well as to give students the option of a more nutritious froyo-gotta watch that freshman 15!). My friends and I found this quite amusing, but unfortunately my ventures were cut short when I made the difficult yet positive decision to transfer to USC. Nevertheless, my froyo dreams followed me home to L.A. and are still very much alive-so stayed tuned!!! </span></div><div><br /></div><div><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.widgetserver.com/syndication/subscriber/InsertWidget.js"></script><script>if (WIDGETBOX) WIDGETBOX.renderWidget('5990ac6f-3cca-4e9b-9f08-cb47054715da');</script><noscript>Get the <a href="http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/js-ratings">Instant Ratings</a> widget and many other <a href="http://www.widgetbox.com/">great free widgets</a> at <a href="http://www.widgetbox.com">Widgetbox</a>!</noscript><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'trebuchet ms';">COMING UP: Meet Me In St. Louis Contd. - Froyo on Delmar!!!</span><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Ted Drewes Frozen Custard (2 locations)</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">4224 S Grand Blvd.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">St. Louis, MO 63111</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">(314) 352-7376</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">OR</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">6726 Chippewa</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">St. Louis MO 63109</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">(314) 481-2124 or (314) 481-2652</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><a href="http://teddrewes.com/Drewes.asp">http://teddrewes.com/Drewes.asp</a></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Bon Appetit at Wash U</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><a href="http://diningservices.wustl.edu/index.asp">http://diningservices.wustl.edu/index.asp</a></span></div>Kathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708548884645532737.post-35730496093146153402009-01-24T15:00:00.000-08:002009-01-24T15:17:28.310-08:00Froyo Beginnings-It's A Beautiful Thing!!!Jeepers! Wow, I can't express enough how excited I am to finally start this blog. It has been one of those things that has been living in the back of my brain for like, a year, yet I never really had the time. Well, my name is Kathryn, and as you have probably inferred from the title, this is a blog devoted to anything and everything froyo. I honestly can't even recall when my froyo affair began-it's kind of like an old friend that you slowly start to love and then one day BAM you're in love. About as much as I know for sure is that my obsession really bloomed at Studio Frozen Yogurt (more to come concerning that later...). Anyway, my dreams for this blog are pretty simple. I'm going to visit and review as many froyo joints as I possibly can, complete with pictures, to create a sort of 'froyo bank' for myself and other addicts. I will also post any info on events and exciting news in the froyo world. Basically any tidbits I find having to do with froyo will end up on this blog. So, welcome to my blog, and please please please leave me comments or shoot me an e-mail if you have any thoughts, questions, or concerns-I welcome it all! I promise I will update the blog every few days to keep you guys coming back for more. Ok, that's about it folks-I'm gonna go get me some celebratory froyo!!! <3 Kat <3 Kathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366230182346626967noreply@blogger.com2
